General Munroe

Were you ever at the battle of Ballynahinch
Where the country arose to stand their defence
Where many's the battle we did undergo
Commanded by that hero called General Munroe.

My name is George Clokey my age is eighteen
In many's the battle and scrimmage I've been
Munroe left the mountains his men to the fields
And they fought for twelve hours and never did yield.

Munroe being weary and wanting a sleep
Gave a woman ten guineas his secret to keep
When she got the money the devil tempted her so
That she sent for the army and surrounded Munroe.

The army came up and surrounded the place
And they took him to Lisbum and lodged him in jail
They took him to Lisburn without more delay
Struck his head on a spear that very same day.

Then up came his sister she was well-dressed in green
With a sword by her side that was both sharp and keen
Three cheers she did give and away she did go,
Saying: "I'll have revenge for my brother Munroe."
